Do Not Carry Bitterness Into Eternity
One day your pain will end on earth, but the condition of your soul will continue into eternity. The sickness that made you cry, the person who wounded you, the disappointment that broke your heart, the betrayal you never forgot, and the anger you carried for years will all become small when your last breath leaves your body. Then you will discover whether you allowed pain to drive you toward God or whether you allowed pain to poison your heart. Do not let suffering turn you against the One who can save you. You may have gone through things that were deeply unfair. You may have lost your health. You may have lost someone you loved. You may have prayed and felt as though God was silent. You may have watched other people receive what you desperately wanted. You may have asked, “Why me?” until the question became anger. But hear this carefully: pain does not give you permission to become bitter against God. Bitterness is dangerous because it rarely begins loudly. It starts quietly. A wound. A disappointment. An unanswered question. An offense you keep remembering. Then anger grows. Forgiveness becomes harder. Prayer becomes cold. You stop trusting God. You stop listening. You begin blaming Him for everything that hurts. And little by little, your heart moves away. Hebrews 12:15 warns about a “root of bitterness” springing up and troubling you. A root grows underground before anyone sees what is happening above the ground. That is what bitterness can do inside you. People may still see you smiling. You may still attend church. You may still call yourself a Christian. But inside, something may be growing that is slowly choking your love for God. Do not feed it. If someone hurt you, forgive. If you are angry with God, tell Him honestly and surrender that anger. If envy has entered your heart, repent. If strife has become normal in your life, repent. If suffering caused you to walk away from Christ, come back now. Do not wait until your final day to discover that the pain you carried for years was never worth your soul. Heaven is not a place of bitterness. Heaven is peace. Heaven is purity. Heaven is rest. Heaven is joy in the presence of God. Revelation 21:4 says that God will wipe away every tear, and there will be no more death, sorrow, crying, or pain. The wounds you carried on earth do not have to follow you forever. But Hell is the opposite. Hell is not peace. Hell is not rest. Hell is not healing. Hell is regret without another earthly opportunity. Hell is memory without the ability to go back and repair what you refused to repair. Hell is knowing you had chances to forgive, chances to repent, chances to return to God, and still refused. That should terrify you. Imagine reaching the place where you remember every warning. You remember the person you refused to forgive. You remember every time God dealt with your heart. You remember every moment you could have humbled yourself. You remember every chance you had to surrender the bitterness. But now there is no tomorrow. You cannot say, “I will forgive next week.” You cannot say, “I will return to God when I feel better.” You cannot say, “I will repent when the pain leaves.” Earth was the place where those choices could be made. Do not waste that place. Some of you are angry with God because of what happened to your body. Maybe sickness changed your life. Maybe surgery changed your appearance. Maybe pain has lasted for years. Maybe you prayed and the healing did not come the way you expected. Do not allow suffering to convince you that God has abandoned you. Your body may be weak, but your soul must not become poisoned. Your body may carry scars, but your heart does not have to carry hatred. Your body may lose strength, but your faith does not have to die. Second Corinthians 4:16 says that even though the outward man perishes, the inward man can be renewed day by day. You may not understand everything God allowed. You may never receive every answer while you are alive. But do not exchange eternal life for an answer you did not receive. Do not let one painful chapter make you throw away your entire walk with God. And be careful with unforgiveness. Jesus spoke strongly about forgiveness because He knows what unforgiveness does to the heart. When you refuse to forgive, the person who hurt you may continue living while you carry the poison. You replay the offense. You imagine revenge. You keep the wound alive. You tell yourself you will never release it. Meanwhile, the bitterness is eating you. Forgiveness does not mean what happened was acceptable. It does not mean the pain was imaginary. It means you refuse to allow another person's sin to become a chain around your own soul. Release it to God. Matthew 6:14–15 says that if you forgive others, your heavenly Father will forgive you, but if you refuse to forgive, there are serious consequences. Do not play with that warning. One day, your last day will come. You may be lying on a bed, remembering your life. The anger may suddenly look foolish. The argument you carried for twenty years may suddenly look small. The person you refused to forgive may not even be in the room. The sickness that made you angry with God may already have weakened your body completely. Then what? Will you still want to hold the bitterness? Will you still want to win the argument? Will you still want to blame God? Or will you suddenly wish you had surrendered everything years earlier? Do not wait for that bed. Do not wait until your body is shutting down before you become desperate for peace with God. Do not wait until death is near before forgiveness suddenly becomes important. Today is the day to release it. Today is the day to forgive. Today is the day to return. Today is the day to repent. Today is the day to come back to your first love. Psalm 34:14 says, “Depart from evil, and do good; seek peace, and pursue it.” That is not passive. Pursue peace. Fight to keep bitterness out of your heart. Fight to forgive. Fight to remain close to God even when life hurts. You have a choice. You can allow pain to make you softer before God, or harder against Him. You can allow suffering to push you into prayer, or push you into rebellion. You can allow disappointment to teach you trust, or let it become poison. Choose carefully. Because one day, you will leave this earth. And when that day comes, every earthly wound will be behind you, but the spiritual condition you carried into eternity will matter. Heaven is too glorious to lose over bitterness. Hell is too terrible to enter because you refused to forgive. Jesus is too precious to walk away from because life became painful. Come back to Him now. If you know you are not right with God and you want to surrender your life to Jesus Christ, pray sincerely from your heart: “Heavenly Father, I come to You in the Name of Jesus Christ. I admit that I am a sinner and I cannot save myself. I believe that Jesus Christ died for my sins and rose again. Lord Jesus, forgive me, wash me with Your blood, and have mercy on me. I repent of my sins and turn away from my old life. Remove bitterness, anger, envy, strife, and unforgiveness from my heart. Help me forgive those who have hurt me and help me trust You even when I do not understand my pain. Come into my life and be my Lord and Savior. Give me strength to obey You and remain faithful to You until the end. Write my name in the Book of Life. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”
