The Day Your Last Excuse Dies
One day your mouth will stop arguing. One day your laughter will stop. One day every excuse you have used against God will collapse, because your final breath will come and you will cross into eternity. On that day, nobody will need to convince you that death is serious. Nobody will need to explain judgment to you. Nobody will need to tell you whether Hell is real. The debate will be over because you will be standing inside the consequence of what you chose to believe. You can laugh at Christians now. You can mock the Gospel now. You can say people who preach repentance are too serious. You can say Hell is only a story created to frighten people. You can push away conviction, reject warning after warning, and still wake up the next morning feeling safe. But waking up tomorrow is not proof that God approves of your life. It may simply mean mercy has given you another day. Do not abuse that mercy. You may have already received more chances than you realize. Someone spoke to you about Jesus. You ignored them. A sermon disturbed your heart. You pushed it away. Something inside you told you to stop a certain sin. You continued. You promised God you would change later. Later came, and you still did not change. How many warnings do you need before you listen? How many chances must God give before you stop saying, “Not now”? Second Peter 3:9 says that the Lord is longsuffering because He is not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. His patience is not permission to keep rebelling. His patience is mercy holding the door open. But the door will not remain open forever. There will be a final sermon you hear. There will be a final warning that reaches your heart. There will be a final moment when repentance is still possible. There will be a last day when your heart beats inside your chest. You do not know when that day is. This is what makes delay so dangerous. You may think you have ten years. You may have ten hours. You may think you will become serious when you are older. You may never become older. You may think you will repent when life becomes calmer. Your final day may arrive while everything still looks normal. Your phone may still be charged. Your clothes for tomorrow may already be ready. Your money may still be in your account. Your family may still expect you home. But when your time ends, your plans cannot command death to wait. Hebrews 9:27 says, “It is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment.” Once. You do not get another earthly life after you discover you were wrong. That is why repentance after the opportunity has passed is such a terrible thought. Imagine finally wanting the mercy you mocked. Imagine finally wanting Jesus after spending your life rejecting Him. Imagine remembering every person who warned you. Imagine remembering every time you laughed. Imagine remembering every moment conviction came and you said, “Later.” You may suddenly want to come back and warn your family. You may remember a brother, sister, husband, wife, child, or friend who is still living the same way you lived. You may desperately want to tell them, “Listen now. Do not come where I am.” But why wait until you can no longer help them? Warn them now. Tell them now. Turn to God now. Jesus Christ already did what was necessary for your salvation. He gave His life. His blood was shed. The invitation has been given. The Gospel has reached you. The question is what you will do with it. John 3:18 says that whoever believes in Christ is not condemned, but whoever refuses Him remains condemned. God is not asking you to save yourself. He is calling you to stop rejecting the One who came to save you. Do not let pride destroy you. Do not let unbelief destroy you. Do not let mockery destroy you. Do not become so comfortable laughing at God that your heart can no longer feel the danger. There are things you may find funny today that will not be funny on your final day. When your body is failing, you will not care about winning religious arguments. When your breathing becomes weak, you will not care about appearing clever before your friends. When your final hour comes, you will not care how many people agreed with your unbelief. The question will become brutally personal: Where is your soul going? That day is coming. And when it comes, your fame will not help you. Your money will not help you. Your friends will not help you. Your unbelief will not protect you. The jokes will be gone. Only truth will remain. This is why you must stop treating salvation like something you can deal with whenever you feel ready. You are ready when God is calling you. You are ready when conviction comes. You are ready while you still have breath. Do not wait until the sentence has been passed before you suddenly want mercy. Seek mercy while mercy is calling. Isaiah 55:6 says, “Seek ye the Lord while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near.” While He may be found. Those words should shake you. There is a “while.” There is an opportunity. There is a present moment. Use it. If you have mocked the Gospel, repent. If you have rejected Jesus, come to Him. If you keep returning to the same sin while promising to change later, stop delaying. If your heart has become hard, ask God to break it now before death breaks every illusion you have carried. One day your last excuse will die. One day your final opportunity will be behind you. One day you will know what was true. Do not wait for that day to become a believer in what you should have believed while mercy was still calling your name. Come to Jesus Christ now. If you know you are not right with God and you want to surrender your life to Jesus Christ, pray sincerely from your heart: “Heavenly Father, I come to You in the Name of Jesus Christ. I admit that I am a sinner and I cannot save myself. I believe that Jesus Christ died for my sins and rose again. Lord Jesus, forgive me, wash me with Your blood, and have mercy on me. I repent of my sins and turn away from my old life. Come into my life and be my Lord and Savior. Give me the strength to obey You, follow You, and live for You from this day forward. Write my name in the Book of Life and help me to remain faithful to You until the end. Thank You for saving me. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”
